Advanced Spring Design - Automatic Update: Release 7.12
Effective Date: Dec 27, 2012
Existing ASD customers: updates will automatically be downloaded upon program start-up.

NOTICE: If the text on your ASD7 forms seems too large for the forms, getting cut off by the neighboring text and boxes, you need to adjust the DPI setting for your computer to the “Default Scale” of 96 DPI. After restarting your computer, the text will fit properly in your ASD7 forms. If you need to increase the size of the forms on your screen, use a different resolution. The screen resolution is independent from the DPI setting.

If you need instructions on how to make these changes, please contact UTS at support@uts.com and we can provide a document giving specific instructions for the operating system on your machine.

Updates in ASD release 7.12:

Enterprise Database Version of ASD:
  • An "export/import" utility has been provided to allow seamless migration of spring designs from standalone seats to the common enterprise database.

General - Help:
  • Added links for fatigue and coiling direction related topics.

General - Synchronization of Forms Fixed:
  • Some of the check boxes on the forms were not causing the designs to recalculate automatically.

General - Truncation of Notes Fixed:
  • Notes and descriptions were getting truncated by the database during storage.

General - Rectangular Wire Beams:
  • Bug fix: Fixed a minimum tensile strength unit conversion problem when switching materials when in Metric mode.

General - User-Defined SN Data Saved:
  • This is now properly saved with designs in the database.

General - Standard Wire Sizes:
  • When adding new materials, selecting "No Standard Size" caused a critical error (LISTCOPY) when a wire size was input in several of the helical spring programs.

General - Material Properties:
  • The MTS coefficients are updated for ASTM A679.
  • Material property data is now available for ASTM A227 Class II.
  • If equation type Constant is selected, parameters P1 to P4 are correctly displayed as 0.

General - Hot Coiled Springs Torsion Modulus:
  • The torsion modulus now accurately defaults to 11500000 psi and the program includes a correction factor for the spring rate. Prior versions a had reduced value for the torsion modulus in addition to the correction factor which had the effect of doubling up on the correction.

Extension Springs:
  • Improved the logic for providing default hook geometry based on other combinations of inputs.
  • Added Swivel Hooks as new end type option. These can have different wire size and material from the body coils.

Parallel Compression Springs:
  • The scaling for envelope diagram has been changed from isotropic to linear.

Belleville Washers:
  • Changed the stress plot to display the tensile stress at the outer bottom edge, as that is where the fatigue life is limited.
  • Added a second load point to allow cycling between two loads.
  • Added an option for flat bearing surfaces.

External Snap Rings:
  • The forms displayed the tolerance signs incorrectly.

Spiral Torsion Springs:
  • Equation PS-21 is no longer included as a default constraint but the forms adds an option to include it if so desired.

Double Torsion Springs:
  • Wire length was incorrectly calculated based on active coils per side but is updated to be a function of body coils per side.

Advanced Spring Design - Automatic Update: Release 7.11

Updates in ASD release 7.11:

Enterprise Version Administration Updates:
  • Designs can be archived, making them effectively "read only" to ALL users.
  • Users can be classified in more ways, giving them FULL or "read-only" access to designs they did not originate.
  • Users can selectively block others from viewing their own designs.

General - File Export:
  • Files can be exported as .TXT or .XML formats for reading by external programs.

General - File Open Window:
  • When a user searches and the results come back, the number of designs returned are shown.
  • The Open button was moved to the left.

General - Close ASD Options:
  • Dialog now offers "Yes", "No", and "Cancel" options.

General - Metric Wire Sizes:
  • The number of standard metric wire sizes is increased from 29 to 54.

General - Chrome Silicon and Chrome Vanadium Materials:
  • Updated the MTS coefficients based on the ASTM data table.

Extension Springs:
  • Hook 1 and Hook 2 lengths are no longer optional inputs. Their values are driven by the geometry components.
  • Free length now accounts for nesting of tapered end coils.
  • Bug fix – The interface wasn't always synchronized with the 3D graphics.

Rectangular Wire Torsion:
  • Switched to use equivalent cross section area for MTS estimation. Was using moment of inertia.
  • Body length formula updated to properly account for keystoning.

Compression Springs:
  • Metric stress/deflection plot scale bug fixed.
  • Changed the stress correction factor back to K1 for fatigue calculations but still use K2 for static load conditions. That is, the corrected stresses reported for preset springs ARE NOT used for the fatigue life calculations. The program first multiplies the stresses by K1/K2 before applying them to the fatigue life calculations.

Hot Coiled Compression Springs:
  • Input form corrected to show Expanded Coil OD.

Belleville Washers:
  • Improved the ability to backsolve under various input scenarios.
  • Reduced the stress at which preset is recommended, based on table RR-13 in the online help.

Wave Washers:
  • Added two new caution messages regarding the stress at solid and the ratio of the diameter to the radial wall. The ratio should be around 8 and if it's much less, a Belleville is suggested.

Constant Force Springs:
  • Cycle life estimate added.
  • MTS is now a function of strip thickness, for three possible grades and is now an optional input.

Spiral Torsion Springs:
  • Cycle life estimate added.
  • MTS is now a function of strip thickness, for three possible grades and is now an optional input.
  • Available turns variable was incorrect… it is now defined as Turns to Set minus Deflection.

Power Springs:
  • Cycle life estimate added.
  • MTS is now a function of strip thickness, for three possible grades and is now an optional input.
  • Three new variables added to describe winding in addition to unwinding.

Conical Extension Springs:
  • Hook extension variables now appear on the form and report.

Torsion Bars -- Round and Rectangular:
  • Variable sk% added to the interface and reports with the description "% of MTS".

Beam Springs:
  • Life variable added to all four models. Forms and reports should be updated to include it.

Snap Rings:
  • The 3D image axial and radial thickness dimensions were reversed.
